Aparajita, an Indian woman, is subjected to domestic violence, as Naveen, her husband of twelve years starts beating her up regularly, breaking bones. She does not understand why—she has a good job and is a hardworking and devoted wife and mother.

But how could she divorce him? In rural India, called Bharat, where this story is set, a lone woman is ill treated. A divorcee is stigmatized and exploited. Anyway, the women in Bharat are taught to depend first on their father, then their husband, and then their son. It was unheard of for a woman to be independent. Her father and brother were dead, her son was very young, and she had no male relatives to depend on.
She knocks on every door for help—the police, the social workers, her family, Naveen’s family, the home for destitute women—but learns that in the male dominated society of India, the odds are weighed heavily against her.
Finding no help from anywhere, she is determined to fight for herself, her son and her widowed mother.
But suddenly, she finds herself on the street, as her house burns down.
How does she fight them all? How does she succeed? How does she manage to turn the tables on Naveen, so that he is forced to limp back, with his tail between his legs? Does she take him back?

Women and their rights in India

An excellent book that reveals to the world outside of India how women's right s play out inside of the sub-continent. Women have a hard life there because of the culture but some of them are struggling to break these bonds and gain the right to control their on destinies. This inspirational book is the story of one such woman.
