According to the Hungarian-American Nobel laureate Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, this metropolis at the crossroads of Europe has a special atmosphere of respect for science. It has been the venue of numerous scientific achievements and the cradle, literally, of many individuals who in Hungary, and even more beyond its borders, became world-renowned contributors to science and culture.

Six of the eight chapters of the book cover the Hungarian Nobel laureates, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the university, the medical school, agricultural sciences, and technology and engineering. One chapter is about selected secondary schools from which seven Nobel laureates (Szent-Gyorgyi, de Hevesy, Wigner, Gabor, Harsanyi, Olah, and Kertesz) and the five "Martians of Science" (von Karman, Szilard, Wigner, von Neumann, and Teller) had graduated. The concluding chapter is devoted to scientist martyrs of the Holocaust.

A special feature in surveying Hungarian science is the contributions of scientists that left their homeland before their careers blossomed and made their seminal discoveries elsewhere, especially in Great Britain and the United States. The book covers the memorabilia referring to both emigre scientists and those that remained in Hungary.

The discussion is informative and entertaining. The coverage is based on the visible memorabilia, which are not necessarily proportional with achievements. Therefore, there is a caveat that one could not compile a history of science relying solely on the presence of the memorabilia.

Istvan Hargittai, PhD, DSc, is Professor Emeritus (active) of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea (London) and a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He has honorary doctorates from Moscow State University, the University of North Carolina, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Structural Chemistry. His books have appeared in eight languages, and include, among others, 'Great Minds'; 'Buried Glory'; 'Drive and Curiosity'; 'Judging Edward Teller'; 'The Road to Stockholm'; and the 'Candid Science' book series.

Magdolna Hargittai, PhD, DSc, is Research Professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. She is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea (London). She has an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina. Her books include, among others, 'Symmetry through the Eyes of a Chemist'; 'In Our Own Image'; 'Visual Symmetry'; 'Great Minds'; and the 'Candid Science' book series. The Oldest Fairt Tale?

I enjoyed this book. I got this because it was recommended as an alternative to the popular fairy tales that don't include children of color. The cover art work is beautiful. This book was taken from an ancient Egyptian text and has similarities to the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife in the bible. All the material in this book may not be appropriate for the age fairy tales are designed for. This book does talk about how one of the brother's wives in the story tries to seduce the other brother, but the brother turns his sister in law down and she then cries rape to save face. This book includes the story written in hieroglyphics and then in English. I didn't like the way the Notes were organized at the end of the story. In the notes they try to explain the discrepancies in the translation. I thought this section was poorly written and difficult to read. Overall I liked it. I value reading the stories that cultures value and teach and reteach to their people. It gives insights to what a culture values and desired in the character of it's people. This original papyrus was a copy of an older text as explained in the forward of the book be Runoko Rashidi. I highly recommend.

About the Author

Chinese Civil War Armies 1911-49

For the past 20 years, I have been looking for a book that describes uniforms and equipments used by the Chinese Armies during WW II. This book is the one I have waited for. It is precious because I know it is impossible for a Chinese author to write a book as such without any political overtone, and I was wondering why would anyone else have the interest. This book is smartly titled "Chinese Civil War Armies", not "Chinese World War II Armies" to reflect the internal conflict within the country during that time. The detail description of the uniforms and equipments, as well as the historical accounts are execellent. The color plates are unprecedented. My only criticisms are 1. There is no glossary for all the tranlated Chinese terms mentioned in the book. 2. The text and the related pictures are far apart. I congradulate the author, Mr. Jowett, for the monumental book.

Good not great

I think the book tries to cover to much in to little space. I would have preferred to see three books instead of one...The first one would cover the Warlord period up to the early 1930s...the second would focus on the conflict between Japan and China from the early 30s through WW2...the last would focus on the struggle between the Communists and the Nationalists...clearly there is some overlap here, but that should be easily handled by good authors...

Detroit's legendary love affair with the automobiles is evident in early work of commercial photography innovators Jimmy Northmore and Mickey McGuire, among others. More than a generation later, Nicola Kuperus plays with these commercial classics by juxtaposing beautiful cars and models in questionable scenarios. German artist Karin Jobst rounds out the now section of the exhibition with impressionistic studies of familiar Detroit architecture and other sites around the city.

Such a beautiful collections of portraits

As a Detroit native, I first saw these photos as an exhibit called "Motor City Muse" at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and was blown away by the photo collection. When the DIA released the collection in book format I purchased it right away. It's nostalgic and also a little heartbreaking to see the huge metropolis Detroit once was compared to what it has become today. The book is divided into several different sections - one section features photos of Detroit from the past. These are phenomenal. Another section compares photos of Detroit from years ago compared to the same buildings today. These photos are interesting, if not a little sad. There is a section dedicated to the automobile industry, Detroit is "Motor City" afterall. Finally, there is a section of artistically shot vehicles each one with a dead woman in it - not actual dead women, but models acting as if they are dead. I wasn't too crazy about these ones, maybe they were a little too avant garde for my tastes. However, the book itself is fantastic, a great coffee table piece!

Since I was a child I've loved this book

I'm 34 years old. This book was given to me when I was 8. It served as the backstop against all of the angst, fear, anger and confusion of pre-pubescent existence. Overall, great book for a beginning student

Positives:
-informative
-easy to understand
-great glossary in the back in case you don't understand a vocabulary word

Negatives:
-the outline of the chapters take awhile to get used to (they organize things by: anatomy, then problems, then the nursing process instead of by subject matter)
-sometimes they give way too much information on a topic so the chapters are really long and can get boring

Only because it was required....

Wordy, repetitive, unnecessarily complicated format for the content; the chapter itself doesn't really roll together smoothly, for most of them, especially in the beginning. Not to mention the publishers offer online study options like practice NCLEX questions and answers ebook, but it's only chapter 31. Why chapter 31, what the.... am I going to do with that except for one else small slice of this class? BTW this book has something like 2000 pages, it weighs 20+ lbs I can't carry it everywhere with me.... The website isn't reliable so don't count on being able to study when you want to or need do, it's like you have to check in every few hours and send a lot of emails to tech support who, thus far, have not been helpful.

Her father and brother were dead, her son was very young, and she had no male relatives to depend on.
She knocks on every door for help—the police, the social workers, her family, Naveen’s family, the home for destitute women—but learns that in the male dominated society of India, the odds are weighed heavily against her.
Finding no help from anywhere, she is determined to fight for herself, her son and her widowed mother.
But suddenly, she finds herself on the street, as her house burns down.
How does she fight them all? How does she succeed? How does she manage to turn the tables on Naveen, so that he is forced to limp back, with his tail between his legs? Does she take him back?

Women and their rights in India

An excellent book that reveals to the world outside of India how women's right s play out inside of the sub-continent. Women have a hard life there because of the culture but some of them are struggling to break these bonds and gain the right to control their on destinies. This inspirational book is the story of one such woman.

About the Author

David Gouverneur was National Director of Urban Planning for the Ministry of Urban Development of Venezuela and co-founder of the Urban Design Program and Director of the Mayor’s Institute in City Design at Universidad Metropolitana in Caracas. He has 33 years' experience of teaching Architecture, Urban Design and City Planning. His professional practice focuses on urban plans for distressed neighbourhoods, upgrading informal settlements, historic districts, new centralities and areas affected by disaster. He is currently Associate Professor in Practice of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, teaching Landscape Urbanism Studios, Cross-disciplinary Design Studios, and Electives, with an emphasis on developing countries.

Very good theoretical framework.

Very good theoretical framework, but theory relies too heavily on government rather than private sector initiative. The problem of informal settlements is usually the result of lack of public initiative, which I thought the book would address via an approach that can be taken by private developer's.
