GARY GROTH-MARNAT, PHD, ABPP, is an author, lecturer, researcher, and practicing clinical psychologist and neuropsychologist. He is the author of the bestselling Handbook of Psychological Assessment, Fifth Edition, published by Wiley.
ARI DAVIS maintains a private practice in depth- and psychoanalytically-oriented psychotherapy in Beverly Hills and the San Fernando Valley, California. He is also a software developer specializing in the development of expert systems, analysis and reporting, and assessment/diagnostic software in the medical and psychological fields.

Enjoy the Book - Know the Software's Shortcomings

The book is concise, up-to-date, and clearly written with excellent guidelines for psychological report writing. Conceptually, the accompanying software is super, but its execution was very disappointing. The main shortcoming is the inability to add content into the program for future, repeated use. Yes, the program might provide 3 or 4 "common phrases" that you can insert into the report, and yes you can modify those 3 or 4 phrases, save them in the program, and re-use them later. However, you cannot add additional content beyond the defined limits of the 3 or 4 fields that are provided. Similarly, there are built-in tests (MMPI-2, WAIS, WISC) that you can put raw & T-scores into that the program can use in your report and/or make into slick charts. However, there is no way to add other tests (e.g., MMPI-A, etc.) or tables into this part of the program or even fix the spelling errors that are generated in the charts. There are a number of other annoying "bugs" such as clicking a drop-down to enter a pronoun will sometimes result in choosing a country, the screen to rate a patient/client on 7 domains (so that the program can generate possible recommendations) does not allow you to access the final few domains, etc. Overall the software, with significant tweaking by the creators, has tremendous potential.

A great teaching tool but-

Very helpful for teaching and quick report writing however, as noted, software does not live up to promise. It is exceptionally frustrating and takes more time than it is worth. As a teaching tool the software is useful, but by a second testing course lacks sufficient flexibility.

Beware of the software!

While the book is very comprehensive, the software is problematic. First, the software does not work with Windows 8 and compromised my operating system severely. Second, after contacting their tech support and being assured the software would work on Windows 7 platforms, I attempted to install it on an older computer running that OS. Same issues; spent several hours working with tech support and no fix. Wiley needs to overhaul the software on a major level or simply not offer this product to busy professionals like myself who have neither the time nor the willingness to spend countless hours on a faulty software configuration.
