HER DREAMS Lin di Ana is a woman of future greatness, but she doesn’t know it yet, she’s only ten years old. She was born in a place not of her choosing—the primitive fishing village of Bree, where technology is outlawed and mail is still delivered by carrier birds and fish. Lin feasts on daydreams of traveling the world and importing modern gadgets to backward Bree. And lately, she dreams of going away to boarding school in a country known as the Continent, the epicenter of Luratia’s social and technological awakening.

HER FIGHT When Lin loses the person she most loves, she takes on a victorious fight to modernize Bree. Lin is certain that life for everyone will improve, but discovers instead that progress can be messy and win you enemies along the way.

From the Author
How to be Happy on a Cloudy Planet is the first book in a series that spans the life of Lin di Ana. Lin is destined to become a great person in the annals of her planet's history -- the emancipator of Luratia's last slave race -- but she doesn't know this yet; she's only ten years old.

The Luratia Chronicles explores how an exceptionally bright child with a big heart and a handful of flaws takes charge of her destiny and makes for herself an amazing, beautiful life of service and advocacy. But great lives are not easy lives, and through every stage of maturity, Lin grapples with inner and outer struggles: impatience, impulsiveness, guilt, pride, and the persistent array of life's hardships.

The Luratia Chronicles, too, is an educational science fiction series that realistically explores what a planet's evolutionary arc might look like if:

  • The super-material graphene is developed abundantly and with ever-wiser applications that improve the quality of medicine, machinery, engineering, architecture, communications, transportation modes, and construction materials. Graphene is so new a discovery on Earth, few people outside of nanotechnology research and academia know of its existence. But we soon will. Graphene will outshine the contributions of steel, plastic, and the silicon chip as transformative milestones in Earth's long evolutionary adventure.

  • Energy is harvested directly from the sun on satellite platforms in near orbit and in such volume that it can be distributed free to all corners of the world. Implementing the technique of wireless energy distribution first introduced by Nicolas Tesla, real-time sun energy is distributed planet-wide through the air, eliminating the need for batteries or fuel storage facilities.

  • Science and love are intelligently paired. The applications of rapidly advancing technology are guided by a high regard for the greater good and an uncompromising respect for the health of people and planet. Population growth is limited to ensure a higher quality of life; machines free people from dangerous manual labor but do not contribute to unemployment; international collaboration in research and development leads to unprecedented advancements; and innovations in economics begin to evolve the planet from a profit-motive exploiter of natural resources to a service-motive society founded on cooperation, creative collaboration, kindness and goodwill.

Heartfelt storytelling in an other-worldly environment that is not alien...
    By Debra
Melanie Pahlmann is a remarkable story teller who engages her readers from the first sentence. She tells a universal story of love, loss, joy and sadness, tragedy and triumph -- the spectrum of human experience. Crafted from a complex milieu of technology, science and interpersonal relationships, Lin's story mirrors the all-too-human tale set on another planet in another star system.

Clouds, plants, creatures -- even solar energy and environmental harmony -- are all exquisitely developed to ignite the imagination while reminding us of our own stories. To categorize "How to be Happy on a Cloudy Planet" only as a children's book would rob both child and the adult within all of us of the richness of experience that flows from Lin's first-person telling of her life.

The opportunity to be transported by Lin's story -- out of the mouth of babes -- is to embrace our own story and explore the possibilities not only for us as individuals, but as a species interacting with a living planet. "How to be Happy on a Cloudy Planet" will inspire us all to be happy wherever we are.

What is possible for us here on Earth
    By Elizabeth Farrell-Carpenter
How to be Happy on a Cloudy Planet is a science fiction coming of age novel about a little girl living on the planet Luratia 360 light years from Earth. Although Luratia is an advanced free-energy planet, where power is collected in outer space above the clouds and then distributed to everyone for free, Lin, the 10 yr old heroine and a lover of technology, must overcome the many challenges of living in the backward fishing village where she was born.

Even though the Luratians are not human, I found them very relatable. Lin loses her mom early in the book and has a traumatized and dictatorial dad to contend with as she tries to bring progress to a town that is resistant to change. The characters are beautifully articulated and the contrast of the sleepy fishing village with the rest of the planet that is far more advanced is sharply drawn. I think everyone will find a part of Lin in themselves as I did. A valuable book about the pros and cons of progress for all ages, How to Be Happy on a Cloudy Planet, takes us deep into what is possible for us here on Earth and the challenges we face getting there.

Life is Similar on Other Planets!
    By Fire Queen
I would recommend this product to all ages, though more specifically it would be a wonderful family sort of read...parent to children ages 10-18.

The first of the Luratia Chronicles was sweet, inspiring, and as it evolved, very realistic in terms of a family's responses to life events and circumstances. The main character, Lin, is a courageous, smart, committed and adventurous 10-year-old girl.

Initially a reluctant leader not only among her peers, but within the adult sector of her town as well, she continues to find center and express her truth amidst a backwards way of life. Learning from and maturing through one of her teachers, she begins to entrain everyone around her, particularly her own family.

Can't wait for the sequel to meet Lin as she grows up a bit!
