About the Author
Retired from University of Washington, Seattle, WA

Denise Anderson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington, where she teaches a variety of courses including general microbiology, medical bacteriology laboratory, and medical mycology/parasitology laboratory. Equipped with a diverse educational background, including undergraduate work in nutrition and graduate work in food science and in microbiology, she first discovered a passion for teaching when she taught microbiology laboratory courses as part of her graduate training. Her enthusiastic teaching style, fueled by regular doses of Seattle’s famous coffee, receives high reviews by her students. Outside of academic life, Denise relaxes in the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle, where she lives with her husband, Richard Moore, and dog, Dudley (neither of whom are well trained). When not planning lectures, grading papers, or writing textbook chapters, she can usually be found chatting with the neighbors, fighting the weeds in her garden, or enjoying a fermented beverage at the local pub.

Although no longer an active member of the author team, Eugene (Gene) Nester wrote the original version of the present text with Evans Roberts and Nancy Pearsall more than 30 years ago. That text, Microbiology: Molecules, Microbes and Man, pioneered the organ system approach to the study of infectious disease, and was developed specifically for allied health sciences. Gene did his undergraduate work at Cornell and received his Ph.D. in microbiology from Case Western University. He then did postdoctoral work in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University with Joshua Lederberg. Following that, he joined the faculty in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Washington, where he remains active as an emeritus member. His laboratory demonstrated that Agrobacterium transfers DNA into plant cells―the basis for the disease crown gall―a system of gene transfer that has become a cornerstone of plant biotechnology. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Australia Prize and the Cetus Prize in Biotechnology, and was elected to fellowship in the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy for the Advancement of Science, the American Academy of Microbiology, and the National Academy of Sciences in India.

Explains everything very well

Great text!! I am working through Microbiology through the University of New England, and the text has been fantastic at explaining everything I need to know. I purchased this through Lagertha, who was a great seller.

The material in this book is written exceptionally well and makes the subject matter easy to understand

Before taking Micro I was told it's a whole other language and it is a difficult course.The material in this book is written exceptionally well and makes the subject matter easy to understand. The only negative - the book arrived in fair condition. It's week two and some of the pages have already separated from the spine. Not pleased with that, considering I'm reading the book every day.

I rented this book last semester and it contained a lot of good information. It also broke down Microbiology in a way that made it easier to understand. I followed this book first instead of the notes my professor wrote down and usually did pretty good on the test.

It has been the venue of numerous scientific achievements and the cradle, literally, of many individuals who in Hungary, and even more beyond its borders, became world-renowned contributors to science and culture.

Six of the eight chapters of the book cover the Hungarian Nobel laureates, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the university, the medical school, agricultural sciences, and technology and engineering. One chapter is about selected secondary schools from which seven Nobel laureates (Szent-Gyorgyi, de Hevesy, Wigner, Gabor, Harsanyi, Olah, and Kertesz) and the five "Martians of Science" (von Karman, Szilard, Wigner, von Neumann, and Teller) had graduated. The concluding chapter is devoted to scientist martyrs of the Holocaust.

A special feature in surveying Hungarian science is the contributions of scientists that left their homeland before their careers blossomed and made their seminal discoveries elsewhere, especially in Great Britain and the United States. The book covers the memorabilia referring to both emigre scientists and those that remained in Hungary.

The discussion is informative and entertaining. The coverage is based on the visible memorabilia, which are not necessarily proportional with achievements. Therefore, there is a caveat that one could not compile a history of science relying solely on the presence of the memorabilia.

Istvan Hargittai, PhD, DSc, is Professor Emeritus (active) of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. He is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea (London) and a foreign member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He has honorary doctorates from Moscow State University, the University of North Carolina, and the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Structural Chemistry. His books have appeared in eight languages, and include, among others, 'Great Minds'; 'Buried Glory'; 'Drive and Curiosity'; 'Judging Edward Teller'; 'The Road to Stockholm'; and the 'Candid Science' book series.

Magdolna Hargittai, PhD, DSc, is Research Professor at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. She is a member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the Academia Europaea (London). She has an honorary doctorate from the University of North Carolina. Her books include, among others, 'Symmetry through the Eyes of a Chemist'; 'In Our Own Image'; 'Visual Symmetry'; 'Great Minds'; and the 'Candid Science' book series. Her next book will be 'Women Scientists without Borders'. The Hargittais live in Budapest and their two children are professors at US universities.

The Oldest Fairt Tale?

I enjoyed this book. I got this because it was recommended as an alternative to the popular fairy tales that don't include children of color. The cover art work is beautiful. This book was taken from an ancient Egyptian text and has similarities to the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife in the bible. All the material in this book may not be appropriate for the age fairy tales are designed for. This book does talk about how one of the brother's wives in the story tries to seduce the other brother, but the brother turns his sister in law down and she then cries rape to save face. This book includes the story written in hieroglyphics and then in English. I didn't like the way the Notes were organized at the end of the story. In the notes they try to explain the discrepancies in the translation. I thought this section was poorly written and difficult to read. Overall I liked it. I value reading the stories that cultures value and teach and reteach to their people. It gives insights to what a culture values and desired in the character of it's people. This original papyrus was a copy of an older text as explained in the forward of the book be Runoko Rashidi. I highly recommend.

About the Author

Chinese Civil War Armies 1911-49

For the past 20 years, I have been looking for a book that describes uniforms and equipments used by the Chinese Armies during WW II. This book is the one I have waited for. It is precious because I know it is impossible for a Chinese author to write a book as such without any political overtone, and I was wondering why would anyone else have the interest. This book is smartly titled "Chinese Civil War Armies", not "Chinese World War II Armies" to reflect the internal conflict within the country during that time. The detail description of the uniforms and equipments, as well as the historical accounts are execellent. The color plates are unprecedented. My only criticisms are 1. There is no glossary for all the tranlated Chinese terms mentioned in the book. 2. The text and the related pictures are far apart. I congradulate the author, Mr. Jowett, for the monumental book.

I think the book tries to cover to much in to little space. I would have preferred to see three books instead of one...The first one would cover the Warlord period up to the early 1930s...the second would focus on the conflict between Japan and China from the early 30s through WW2...the last would focus on the struggle between the Communists and the Nationalists...clearly there is some overlap here, but that should be easily handled by good authors...

Such a beautiful collections of portraits

As a Detroit native, I first saw these photos as an exhibit called "Motor City Muse" at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and was blown away by the photo collection. When the DIA released the collection in book format I purchased it right away. It's nostalgic and also a little heartbreaking to see the huge metropolis Detroit once was compared to what it has become today. The book is divided into several different sections - one section features photos of Detroit from the past. These are phenomenal. Another section compares photos of Detroit from years ago compared to the same buildings today. These photos are interesting, if not a little sad. There is a section dedicated to the automobile industry, Detroit is "Motor City" afterall. Finally, there is a section of artistically shot vehicles each one with a dead woman in it - not actual dead women, but models acting as if they are dead. I wasn't too crazy about these ones, maybe they were a little too avant garde for my tastes. However, the book itself is fantastic, a great coffee table piece!

Since I was a child I've loved this book

I'm 34 years old. This book was given to me when I was 8. It served as the backstop against all of the angst, fear, anger and confusion of pre-pubescent existence. When "bobby" threw a rock at me, I turned to this book. When "jenny" didn't return my affection, I turned to this book. When "Joey" violated my trust, I turned to this book. Nothing can bridge the gap between the teachings of Jesus and the adolocent existence. My dear people, if you do anything for your children , do buy this book. Give it to them. And let them use it as they will - with God's help. Surely, you will benefit.
