The book came in a binder which was not stated. Also it was half broken and the binder was completely falling apart. Not bad for the price, but very poor quality.

Good Resource for Business and Mgmt Students

The Ikea Edge was written by former CEO Anders Dahlvig who spent 26 years with the company. The last ten years, from 1999 to 2009, as its leader. The reason he decided to write this book was to reinforce his belief that the success of the company was their adherence to traditional business goals while also stressing the importance of social and environmental responsibility.

While Dahlvig shares personal experiences of his time at Ikea, he also lays out a roadmap for other companies who are interested in learning from his experience. After all, Ikea continued to grow and thrive while many companies around the world were going out of business.

Reading this book and following key ideas will help guide business leaders and the heads of companies who want to replicate the success of Ikea. This is a must read book for students who are attending classes in business management and marketing, or anyone who wants to learn how to become a better leader, business owner, or CEO.

Responsible Capitalism

Dahlvig describes history and "inner workings" of IKEA to make a more general point about responsible capitalism. There is a clear tension between a capitalism driven solely by profit maximization (where profit is the ultimate goal) and a capitalism driven by social ambitions (where profit is a necessary means). Dahlvig believes that companies can be successful while advancing the social good, and offers IKEA as a living proof. The success does not come in spite of it's social ambitions, but because of them. They give the solid long-term reference that makes that company connect successfully with the whole range of stakeholders (employers, customers, local governments, ...).

The picture painted is fairly rosy, and I have done no work to verify the claims made. The book is easy to read and non technical, but still offers some interesting insights about how a successful global retailer is run.

(note: I bought this book because I heard Dahlvig's talk at the London School of Economis - LSE - and found it inspiring. Look it up on the web. He's more convincing and passionate "live" than on paper)

Good, steady, informative read. Honest with a careful style to avoid any potential conflicts, but as a result not revelatory, deliberately, or inspiring. Still if you can be that successful in this way there's hope for us all.

Useful Overview

Publshed a number of years ago and written by a distinguished economic historian, this is a useful overview of preindustrial Europe. Cipolla divides the book into 2 parts. The first part is a broad synchronic description of the pre-industrial economy including demography, economy per se, trade, some social history, and technology. This is very much the picture of a predominantly rural society based largely on subsistence agriculture and laboring under Malthusian constraints. Cipolla stresses also that additonal burdens of epidemic disease, war, and weather often imposed stresses beyond the usual Malthusian limits. He is also quite clear on Medieval Europe as a relatively poor backwater compared with China or the Islamic Middle East at its apogee.

In the second part of the book, Cipolla points out some of the more dynamic features of pre-industrial Europe. These include the, by modern standards slow, but real improvements in technology, expansion of international trade, increasing urbanization and commerialization of European society, and its engagement in a major way with the great economic Eurasian centers of China, India, and the Middle East. Cipolla describes also how the major commercial loci of Europe changed over time, migrating from northern Italy to the Low Countries, and then to Britain. Cipolla touches on many of the important themes of European economic development in the early modern period preceding the Industrial Revolution. These include the importance of state competition and mercantilism-imperialism, the crucial role of silver from the Americas in facilitating trade with East Asia, the crucial role of European naval technology, the importance of education, and even the importance of the 17th century Scientific Revolution. While this is not a detailed history, Cipolla makes a number of shrewd comments on the fates of individual nations. He discusses, for example, the role of the Franco-Spanish wars in the decline of Northern Italy, why Spain failed to become a major economic power, and the relative de-industrialization of Southern Europe that followed the burgeoning of the Dutch and British economies. Generally quite readable.

History from 30,000 Feet
By not me
Anyone who worries that economic history has to be boring should read "Before the Industrial Revolution," a readable survey of Western European social and economic history in the late Middle Ages and early modern era. The book is colorful and packed with well-chosen quotes from primary sources. Best of all, it does a great job of illustrating basic economic concepts with examples from everyday life. I think the book could have given more attention to international trade and to developments in credit markets, but, heck, in a book this short, choices had to be made about coverage. Students interested in the pre-history of the industrial revolution should start here. Six stars.

Good book, had fun reading it

First of all, I am not an historian, so I can't very much talk about its academic value.

However, I wished to learn more about medieval times in Europe and this is one of the most well writen and overal pleasant book I read on the subject so far. This book is exactly about what the title advertises : Socioeconomical Europe before the industrial revolution.

Money, money, money...

Nothing funny! (Except this single definitely is, but, you know-- Abba)

Longtime fan of Rachel's writing (granted, I'm her target demo to the point of practically being a mirror), and am really taken with how her voice has maintained its consistent zing while grappling with more complex (read: "grown up") issues. (Still plenty of musical theater references, though...never change.)

This single was as cathartic to read as it must have been to write: the best weapon we have against the fiscal isolation of the freelance lifestyle is commiseration with fellow laborers (Rachel, would you like to be deemed a modern Emma Goldman? Is it still cool to be a communist?)

Absolutely appreciated the unflinching intimacy of the revelations within. A great little nugget of an afternoon read to take your mind off of where your next check is coming from...or at the very least, make you feel that you're not alone in this all-consuming concern.

Great writing but felt depressed afterward.

I really appreciated the authors willingness to expose her emotions. It was very brave and I have enormous respect for her for doing so. I found the book extremely well written but it was mostly about anxiety, rage, emotional violence, persecution, desperation and a destruction of well being wrapped up in a humorous style of writing. The deeper message was addressing the fear of not surviving and not feeling supported and looked after, which I am sure we all feel at some level. After a while, as I was really getting into the book, it felt as if I was reading about a traumatic, extremely painful experience of overwrought, damaging emotions and a disintegrating marriage rather than a funny, quirky tale. It's a really sad story about one persons fear of not surviving.

Money surrounds us with so much emotion. It is a taboo that keeps us from being closer to the ones we love. This is a powerful tale about anxiety over money and the fight to maintain a relationship. I could not put it down. It was the perfect book for me right now. Thank you for writing this and making me feel normal.

Kimberlin, MD, FAAP is the Principal Investigator for the Collaborative Antiviral Study Group (CASG), a network of pediatric academic medical centers that evaluates antiviral therapeutics in rare diseases with a large unmet medical need, including neonatal herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections, congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease, neonatal and infantile influenza infection, neonatal enteroviral sepsis syndrome, and juvenile-onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. Studies conducted by the CASG have led to new drug indications and label changes for acyclovir, valganciclovir, and oseltamivir, and non-CASG studies conducted by Dr. Kimberlin also have led to label changes for valacyclovir.

Dr. Kimberlin is Editor of the 2015 AAP Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases (Red Book), and will be the editor for the 2018 edition as well. He is Past-President of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS), which is the world's largest organization of professionals dedicated to the treatment, control, and eradication of infectious diseases affecting children. Dr. Kimberlin also serves as Vice Chair for Clinical and Translational Research in the UAB Department of Pediatrics, where he holds the Sergio Stagno Endowed Chair in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and is Co-Director of the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases.

Associate editors:
Michael T. Brady MD, FAAP is Professor of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University and Associate Medical Director at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Dr. Brady was on the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases from 2005 until 2014 (Chair from 2010 to 2014). Dr. Brady was an Associate Editor of the 2015 Red Book.

Dr. Brady received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. His pediatric residency was completed at Nationwide children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. His pediatric infectious diseases fellowship was at the Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Brady’s special interests include HIV infection, healthcare-associated infections, perinatal infections and vaccine-preventable infections. He is currently a member of the Board of Scientific Counselors – Infectious Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mary Anne Jackson, MD, FAAP: Following residency at Cincinnati Children’s and fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern, Dr. Jackson has been a faculty member at Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City since 1984 where she is Division Director of Infectious Diseases. She has won numerous teaching awards and was honored in 2012 as the outstanding graduate at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine.

A fellow of the AAP, the Infectious Disease Society of America and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society, she has also been elected to the American Pediatric Society, the Society of Pediatric Research and the Academic Pediatric Association.

She has been a member of the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases since 2009, and is an Associate Editor of Red Book™ 2015. She has authored over 150 peer reviewed publications focusing on strategies to reduce the incidence of hospital acquired infection, judicious use of antibiotics, prevention of antibiotic resistant infection and vaccine implementation and education.

Sarah S. Long, MD, FAAP is Section Chief of Infectious Diseases at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Long is also Professor of Pediatrics at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Dr. Long is an associate editor of The Journal of Pediatrics and is the chief editor of the textbook Principles and Practice of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. She has received numerous teaching awards, the Distinguished Service Award of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the Clinical Teacher Award of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, and the Award for Lifetime Contribution to Infectious Diseases Education by the Section on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Long completed her medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and her residency and fellowship at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children. She is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric infectious disease, and her principal areas of research are vaccine-preventable diseases and management of common infectious diseases in children. She sits on advisory committees for the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Excellent book on relevant up to date reviews.However information is lacking in which vaccines should not be given at the same time on a single visit and the intervals of such vaccinations should be spaced apart . Reasons for such recommendations could preferably be discussed.

Beyond Haynes, Beyond Chilton's, there is the Bentley Manual. Simply the best automotive repair manuals, the Bentley Bibles are worth their weight in gold. While not as photo-heavy as the Haynes manual, this is the MOST informative book I've found on working on Saab 900s. (The series is entirely fabulous, I own both the Saab and Volvo manuals, and they have saved me both time and money.) The best there is... but not perfect

Anyone who works on their own Saab should know that the Bentley manual is King. There's just not a better manual out there. However, even this book is lacking in a lot of ways. For one, it's not for the beginner or for someone who's afraid of messing up their car. This book assumes you have a fairly well-established knowledge of the car and skips a lot of details it assumes you'd know. A total novice would be lost with this book.
On the other hand, if you do know these cars pretty well, the Bentley manual can help fill in the blanks of a project you'd otherwise not want to do if you didn't have a little guidance. Not for the faint of heart though.

the good book

This book managed to teach me a great deal about my car that I was clueless on before. I highly recommend this book to anyone, from the beginner looking to understand how their car works to an intermediate grease monkey like myself.
The book is lacking a couple key areas, though. One is the drawings. The sketch drawings of a certain items/views are not very useful for identifying things (if you're just trying to get the lay of the land under the hood, the Bentley is little help when it comes to smaller components). These desperately need to be upgraded to photos, color, if possible. There's not a whole lot on the vacuum system except a schematic, ditto for a portion of the electrical system and also the A/C/vent system.
Some suggestions to improve the book: a complete breakdown of the car (seems some smaller items are left as an exercise for the reader, as was investigating a broken door latch on my 900), lots more photos, and COLOR!
The pros far outweigh the cons, though, and coupled with a good online help community like the Saab Network bulletin boards, there's very little you can't repair on your own with this book. A must have for anyone who wants to keep their 900's running.
