About the Author
Georgette Heyer's novels have charmed and delighted millions of readers for decades. English Heritage has awarded Georgette Heyer one of their prestigious Blue Plaques, designating her Wimbledon home as the residence of an important figure in British history. She was born in Wimbledon in August 1902. She wrote her first novel, The Black Moth, at the age of seventeen to amuse her convalescent brother; it was published in 1921 and became an instant success.

Heyer published 56 books over the next 53 years, until her death from lung cancer in 1974. Her last book, My Lord John, was published posthumously in 1975. A very private woman, she rarely reached out to the public to discuss her works or personal life. Her work included Regency romances, mysteries and historical fiction. Known as the Queen of Regency romance, Heyer was legendary for her research, historical accuracy and her extraordinary plots and characterizations. She was married to George Ronald Rougier, a barrister, and they had one son, Richard.

Death in the Stocks

This is a good book in the Heyer mystery collection. It is written like many of her other mysteries with increasingly higher levels of suspence which make you want to finish the book before you can put it down. The biggest question is why the body is found in the stocks, and who put him there? And like most of her mysteries, there is romance. But mostly there is just a lot of good humor and a murder.

Excellent! You'll read it many times.

This book is funny and clever. As in most of her novels, mystery and romance, Heyer writes wonderful characters and gives them entertaining dialogue. As an added bonus the mystery keeps you guessing, too. This is a book that is hard to put down and one you will find yourself reading again. Special note: some of the characters in this book reappear in Heyer's Behold, Here's Poison.

Saxo was probably a canon of Lund Cathedral, at that period a Danish cathedral, and lived at the end of the twelfth century. He was in the service of Archbishop Absalon, who encouraged him to write a history of his own country from the beginnings up to his own time, with a strong Christian bias. Starting with the myths and heroic tales of primitive Scandinavia, he devoted the first nine of his sixteen books to legendary material before dealing with the first kings of the Viking age and finished in 1285, after relating the earlier exploits of King Cnut Valdemarsson. The activities of the Danish kings were intimately bound up with the monarchies of Norway and Sweden; Cnut the Great, one of Saxo's heroes, whose empire stretched as far as Britain and Iceland, was ruler of both these countries. In the last books Saxo took particular concern to describe the campaigns of Valdemar the Great and his warrior archbishop, Absalon, against the Wends of North Germany.

The work is a prosimetrum, that is, in six of the first nine books he inserts poems, which are intended to parallel specimens of old Danish heroic poetry in Latin metres. Saxo's Latin prose style is often complex, based as it is on models like Valerius Maximus and Martianus Capella, but he is a lively and compelling story-teller, often displaying a rather sly sense of humour, and an interest in the supernatural. He is the first author to give a full account of Hamlet, whose adventures he relates at some length, the elements of which in a great many respects correspond surprisingly closely with the characters and incidents of Shakespeare's play.

Volume II of Saxo Grammaticus contains books 11-16 of Saxo's work, mainly dealing with the history of the first Danish kings.

About the Author

Karsten Friis-Jensen was born in Copenhagen, and educated at the University there, where he became a teacher from 1985 and a senior lecturer from 1990 in the Institute of Greek and Latin, now a part of the Saxo Institiute. Previously he had worked at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich from 1983 to 1985. He was a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters from 1997 onwards. His main field of study was Medieval Latin literature, which culminated in a scholarly edition of Saxo Grammaticus's Gesta Danorum, published in 2005, with a Danish translation by Peter Zeeberg. His other principal area of research was the medieval reception of the Roman poet Horace, and he directed the work on Horace for the Catalogus translationum et commentariorum in Toronto.

Peter Fisher was born in Sheffield, and was educated there and later at Exeter College, Oxford, where he read Classics and English. He continued as a teacher in these subjects in Welwyn Garden City and subsequently as a lecturer at what is now Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. During this time he wrote an M. Phil. thesis on Christopher Marlowe with Warwick University. Since the late 1970s he has translated and published a number of historical and medical texts from Medieval and Renaissance Latin, mainly Scandinavian. A keen amateur clarinettist, he regularly plays in local chamber groups and orchestras, with whom he has performed several concertos. He is married and has four children.

About the Author
Herman Knief is a Senior Technical at Narus Communications, Inc. He's provided system and network administration services for various clients, including Netcom and Bay Networks. Herman's broad system architecture and administration background includes GTE Government Systems Corp, The USC/ISI office at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the Corporation for National Research Intiatives (CNRI). Jeffrey Graham has been working with computers for most of his life. Windows, UNIX and other operating systems are where he has finally settled for a career. Jeffrey works as a senior systems administrator/manager for Taos Mountain, Inc. Jeffrey has worked in large scale enterprise environments with DNS, Sendmail, NIS, LDAP, and other enterprise-wide services. Andrew Daniels has been involved with systems and network administration for more than eight years. While attending school at Indiana University, he was responsible for a portion of the university's network and systems administration. Since then, he has focused on enterprise-level systems, networks, and security installation and administration.

Great for Setup short on Explanations

This is a hard book for me to rate. On the one hand this book had enough information and examples to make it easy for me to upgrade our DNS Server to Windows 2000, setup a separate Windows 2000 DNS Server at a satellite office from scratch, add a Secondary DNS Server for the Network. The book also has plenty of information on different settings for DNS and how to make it work with DHCP and WINS. Lot's of info on maintenance tools and commands and how they work. However I felt the book really missed being a great book by not completely explaining how DNS works. There just isn't enough written on how and why it works and not nearly enough examples. Like I said it is hard to say because maybe the full explanations and more examples would just be overkill or in the end they don't help with setup but just confuse. So if you want info on how to setup a DNS Server on Windows 2000 this is the book for you, If you want to know how DNS works across the internet and interacts with other operating systems and networks I have to say look elsewhere.

All you need to know about Windows 2000 DNS

This book does an excellent job of covering Microsoft's latest version of DNS. The book covers many of the details of DNS services from the foundations of DNS to the implementation as put forth by Microsoft. A certain amount of knowledge about Windows 2000 and Active Directory is required to follow much of the book, but this is to be expected (and rightfully so) from a specialty book.
Successful Windows 2000 deployments, and Active Directory implementations, will require a solid DNS solution. This book provides all the information needed to successfully deploy Windows 2000 DNS, including integration with existing DNS servers.
The authors provide helpful guidelines for "best practices" and system maintenance issues. They also cover legacy support issues for WINS and other "downlevel" situations.
This book is a very complete reference and guide to understanding the importance of DNS to the Windows 2000 system administrator. It would be an excellent addition to any System Administrator's reference library.

Writer has a banal writing style

The negative reviews of this book comes from the author's banal and subtle writing style. The author is not a bad writer, he is just too subtle. Unfortunately, such writing style is not the best for emphasizing important ideas.
The funny thing about this book is that it APPEARS useless when it is jampacked with extremely useful information. Even though I read this book 7 months ago, I did not appreciate this book until recently when I had to put together a Windows 2000 DNS environment. It is highly informative will teach you some advance DNS topics. It has a surprisingly good chapter on security as well. Although this will NOT be the only DNS book I would buy, it certainly explains many aspects of Windows 2000 DNS better than any book I have read, and I own total of 4 DNS books.
I particularly liked the author's explaination of Active Directory Integrated DNS and DHCP + DDNS interaction.

This book is good overall as an introduction to metaphysical concepts and explaining how having sex affects physical and spiritual health. There are many truths in this book. One that I found particularly interesting is that people who have children tend to age faster than people who don't because of the amount of life force energy that is spent during the procreation process. I found this statement to be very factual because I don't have any children and when I tell people my age they think I'm lying. One of the things I don't like about this book is how it is written. It's really not a book per say it's more like an essay. Most of the pages consist of quotes the author has gathered from various sources to validate his own arguments. I felt like instead of spending so much time trying to validate his self by constantly referring to other authors and medical professionals he should have spent more time developing and clarifying his theories and philosophies. Yet still a good read overall.

About the Author
Gregory S. Alexander is a nationally renowned expert in property and trusts and estates and the A. Robert Noll Professor of Law at Cornell University, New York. Following his graduation from Northwestern University School of Law, he clerked for the Honorable George Edwards of the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Alexander is the winner of the American Publishers Association's 1997 Best Book of the Year in Law award for his work, Commodity and Propriety. More recent books include The Global Debate over Constitutional Property: Lessons for American Takings Jurisprudence and Property and Community (with Eduardo M. Penalver). He is co-author of the most widely used property casebook in the United States (with James Krier and Michael Schill). His articles have appeared in such journals as the Columbia Law Review, the Stanford Law Review, the Michigan Law Review and the Cornell Law Review.

As someone else already noted, if you're here, it's because the book was assigned and you have to buy it. But in the slim chance some professor out there is reading this and trying to make a decision, I'll just say this book is terrible. Of course, I can only compare it to other casebooks I have used this year, but this is by far the worst. A few of the main issues:

1. Unedited Cases - As others have noted, the cases could be edited down substantially to isolate relevant legal issues. The failure to do this results not only in wasted time (the enemy of the law student), but also confusion. The confusion arises because a case will include discussion of ancillary issues to the resolution of the case that are discussed elsewhere in the chapter (frequently later) in greater depth, and there's no contextualization about which is the majority, outdated, etc. Because they are often irrelevant to the "point" of the case, this confusion and delay could be easily avoided through more judicious editing. (Also, there are a lot of "throat-clearing" cases, which just announce a new rule. Editors, here's an idea: instead of wasting my time by making me read 6-8 pages of bull, why not just provide a paragraph explaining the historical development, policy, and the new rule? Oh yeah, because the more pages, the more we pay.).

2. "Notes" - I suppose the authors deserve some credit for attempting to do what many casebooks don't by occasionally providing brief snippets explaining black letter law. But it was almost as if the authors just couldn't bring themselves to complete this pedagogical sacrilege, and the result is confusing passages which obliquely discuss legal issues without offering satisfactory or even organized explanations. The entire tone of these passages can best be described as "coy." My advice would be to just read the real thing: an actual treatise designed to be helpful, rather than "prodding" (read: confusing).

3. "Problems" - Closely related to the "notes" are the problems, which are simply infuriating. The book will pose a question, which you are quite justifiably incapable of answering, because it applies some doctrine or exception which you have not yet learned, or reaches a novel conclusion. And instead of offering an explanation, the vast, vast majority of these questions taunt you by directing you to a case dealing with the issue, usually without a parenthetical explanation. Let me put this simply: there is no way I am going to use what limited spare time I have in law school to go read an unassigned case just to get an answer that is put plainly in a hornbook or E&E.

Most opaque prop text out there - be mad at ur prof if they choose this one

Dukeminier has the unique gift of making even simple topics as opaque as possible. You will need supplements, lots of them, because of the awful way this book is structured, cases chosen, the odd phrasing and, in particular, how future interests are presented. Want proof - Look at "Acing Property" supplement where they give you a special appendix for the way Dukeminier presents things, particularly Rule Against Perpetuities - something already too complicated on its own that Duke manages to foul up further. I really wish law professors would destroy the forced demand for this terrible (more so than most prop casebooks, and achievement in itself) text.

Not good

This is the worst casebook I've had thus far in law school. The authors make a habit of introducing terms and concepts without explanation, causing you to flip back and look (in vain) to see where you missed the explanation. Then, a couple pages later they explain the term or concept, and you realize that when they first mentioned it, you weren't supposed to know what it was yet. If that seems like a terrible way to structure a book to you, then you're right, and I agree.

Let me explain a different way: Concept A is introduced and explained. In the explanation the authors distinguish concept A from concept B. Of course, concept B has not been explained yet so the distinction they draw means nothing to you. You wonder if maybe you missed the page where they explained concept B because this is the first time you are seeing it. You look for it in the previous pages but can't find it. So you keep going: Concept A is explained further, an example is given, and then concept B is explained. After you read the explanation of concept B you can go back and re-read the distinction they drew, which will now make much more sense.

There is also, a complete lack of summary or conclusion following each topic, sub-topic, or chapter. Even a list of the rules, terms, and concepts covered in that particular section, appearing at the end of the section, would be extremely useful. Property, arguably more so than other 1st year law classes, has its own extensive language. Most of this language was developed in medieval times based on antiquated concepts with no link to contemporary times. The meaning of most terms cannot be arrived at intuitively. A list of terms with definitions would be a useful tool to have at the end of each topic/chapter. So, lacking that, take really good notes while you read. Otherwise you will find yourself searching back though the dense, structurally obtuse text to find the inwoven italicized words that "highlight" important terms.

My other issue with the book has to do with the review problems. These problems are probably the best way to gain mastery over the material. There are far too few of them, and no answers or explanations are provided for the vast majority of them. This is probably the publisher's decision though; Aspen wishes to sell you a separate problem book. Cha-ching.

This is the only property casebook I have ever read, but compared to my casebooks from other classes, the material on property law that I have found online, and my general knowledge of instructional writing, this book does a poor job at teaching property.

Dr. David E. McNabb, Professor Emeritus at Pacific Lutheran University, has taught at Oregon State University, the Stockholm School of Economics Riga, the American University of Bulgaria, Evergreen State College, the University of Maryland-UC (Europe), and the University of Washington Tacoma. He is an adjunct professor at Olympic College and a recent member of a consultant group on aspects of nonsampling errors in surveys for an agency of the federal government. He earned his PhD at Oregon State University, his MA at the University of Washington, his BA at California State University, Fullerton. Dr. McNabb has served as director of communications for a caucus of the Washington House of Representatives and as director of economic development for the city of Fullerton, California. He has authored eight books and nearly one hundred articles and conference papers.
