Beautiful Novelette!!

I have not read the Kindle edition of this work, but this is undoubtedly one of the most controversial stories Balzac has produced. It must have caused one hell of a sensation when it was initially published. It certainly can't be considered "classical" Balzac in terms of the plot, but the imagery and philosophical depth is Balzac par excellence. It may not be "scientifically perfect" (I believe he mentions crocodile - in the dessert????), but what a spectacular idea! One almost gets a feel that Balzac is dipping his brush into "decadent" paint: reading this story I kept thinking of Chimera's words from Flaubert's fantastic "Temptation of St. Anthony" - "I seek new perfumes, larger blossoms, pleasures still untasted." Later, in 1884, J.K. Huysmans, in his masterpiece "A Rebours," has described locomotive viewed as a sort of sexual object by the protagonist Des Esseintes. I wonder if he was influenced to some degree by this novelette. On the other hand, this story superbly illustrates that humans are, mostly, sociable creatures and prolonged isolation will make them behave in a totally unexpected way. The ending is profoundly sad, but unavoidable.
This work really brings up a lot of emotions and questions. It also further solidifies the indisputable fact that Balzac was one of the greatest literary geniuses of all times.

This was a story that I read in school and was so impressed that I purchased a book of short stories that this appeared in. The author's use of emotion and imagery is outstanding and this is probably the best short story that I have ever read.

An extremely imaginative story. The exoticism and mystery of the setting and characters (one of the main protagonists is a large feline) will fascinate long after you've finished the book. Haunting.

Robin R. Murphy is Raytheon Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University and directs the Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR). An IEEE Fellow and a founder of Roboticists without Borders, she has worked in disaster robotics research and deployment since 1995.

Describes just what you need to know

This book is perfect for anyone who wants to understand the state of robotics in disaster response. It has key insights for everything from how to interact with emergency-management professionals (and how not to) to the gaps between current practice and need. It is organized by robot type (land, air, water) and has specific examples of failure modes as well as capabilities for each. It also describes the best-practices for doing operations in the field and includes many practical tips for safely operating robots in the field.

Dr. Murphy has been a long time participant and enthusiastic supporter of using robots to assist in disaster recovery. "Disaster Robotics" is an excellent summary of the challenges and state-of-the-art in this exceeding difficult application of robotics.

By John Michael Senger on June 22, 2010 Format: Paperback That the author of Penis Power was advised not to put the word "penis" in the title because it would be offensive to many is strong evidence of the need for this book. Dudley Seth Danoff, an experienced urologist and urological surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, has written a serious and readable manual for anyone with an interest in men's sexual health--an audience that should include nearly every adult. To quote Dr. Danoff, "Doctors talk about the penis only when a patient brings it up because there is a problem." Penis Power is a mix of basic scientific and medical information on the fundamental operation of the penis and its related organs and systems, interspersed with observations gleaned from nearly forty years of medical practice and teaching. A great deal of space is devoted to the connection between a man's self image and his sexual functioning. "From my clinical observations, the single biggest sexual worry of contemporary men is that they will not provide their partners with orgasms of spectacular quantity and quality," Danoff writes. The author covers a broad range of topics in Penis Power, including not only sexually transmitted diseases, but various kinds of erectile dysfunction, their causes and cures. Along the way, he extinguishes many of the myths circumscribing the penis, such as that size makes a difference and that there are treatments or procedures for making a penis larger or more potent. That the author of Penis Power was advised not to put the word "penis" in the title because it would be offensive to many is strong evidence of the need for this book. Dudley Seth Danoff, an experienced urologist and urological surgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, has written a serious and readable manual for anyone with an interest in men's sexual health--an audience that should include nearly every adult. To quote Dr. Danoff, "Doctors talk about the penis only when a patient brings it up because there is a problem."
Penis Power is a mix of basic scientific and medical information on the fundamental operation of the penis and its related organs and systems, interspersed with observations gleaned from nearly forty years of medical practice and teaching.

A great deal of space is devoted to the connection between a man's self image and his sexual functioning. "From my clinical observations, the single biggest sexual worry of contemporary men is that they will not provide their partners with orgasms of spectacular quantity and quality," Danoff writes.

The author covers a broad range of topics in Penis Power, including not only sexually transmitted diseases, but various kinds of erectile dysfunction, their causes and cures. Along the way, he extinguishes many of the myths circumscribing the penis, such as that size makes a difference and that there are treatments or procedures for making a penis larger or more potent. While the book is devoid of the charts and graphs resulting from actual scientific studies, its information is precise and clear. The author insists that readers (and men, in particular) desperately need the information in this book. "I want to drive home the message that using your penis for the purpose nature intended is not only one of life's great pleasures, but also good for your health in general."

The doctor's reference to "health in general" includes mental and emotional health as well as physical health. Penis Power carries a strong, clear message that male sexuality must be developed and applied responsibly and that, if it is so applied, it can lead to more fulfilling and long-lasting relationships. Danoff consistently and forthrightly condemns exploitive male sexual standards. He notes, "the superpotent man always behaves with sensitivity, awareness, and integrity. He knows where to draw the line, especially when a partner says `No!'" Later he writes, "You should care about your partner's sexual pleasure as much as your own."

Finally, Danoff includes a chapter addressed to women and many of their concerns regarding male sexuality and a chapter for men concerned with the aging process and its effect on sexuality. Penis Power is an informative user's manual whose time has come.

Everyone Must Read This - Really!

I heard Dr. Danoff on the Michelangelo Signorile Show and was naturally curious. Particularly if you are a guy, this is a must read; it should be required reading at some point in our human development. Like it or not, the connections between our penises and our brains are an essential fact of our being; I am now convinced of that. Dr. Danoff speaks to us in a way that is easily understood, drawing on thousands of case studies in his practice. This book could save many guys (and perhaps women as well) thousands of dollars on drugs, procedures, and psychotherapy.

I first came to this book not realizing what I would find, but I have to say that I got so much valuable information that I have shared since reading it.

Yes, Dr. Dudley Danoff's book PENIS POWER does discuss sexual health and performance, but if you think it's just about that, then you are missing the majority of its value. What I got from the book is not just the importance of knowing your body but realizing the connection between your feelings and your sexual performance and health. The book really stresses the importance of getting to know what is affecting you mentally and how that impacts the rest of your life.

I also appreciated the importance of knowing what can do harm to the body and affect not just your sexual health but your health overall. Communication is stressed throughout the pages of PENIS POWER as well as how a healthy appreciation for yourself and your body can help you in other areas of your life.

Though the title might seem provocative the content is definitely worth your time, and might in some ways prove life-saving as Dr. Danoff addresses some of the things men can do to improve their lives.

Written in a manner that is easy to understand and appreciate, PENIS POWER helps you to realize the connection between knowing your body and knowing yourself.

Misspelled Titles Make Puppies Cry

This is an excellent text, particularly for the price! But the title is misspelled on the front cover. It should be "Congiura". All in all I'm very glad I bought it, though. It's a first-hand account of the Pazzi Conspiracy written by someone who was actually there (Poliziano, who saved Lorenzo's life by locking him in the sacristy of Santa Maria del Fiore).

The Spanish translation of "The Tequila Worm" is now available. This Great book by the award winning author, Viola Canales, is the story of young Sofia. Told in a vignettes format, the takes place in a Barrio in Texas. The characters are great and strong and take you to places in the heart. I urge any school librarian or public librarian purchase this book for the Spanish speaking community.

I wanted to read this book in Spanish but my kindle was not using my Spanish-English dictionary, instead it went to my English dictionary. After several tries to correct this with customer service i was assured that I would get a message very soon saying the problem was fixed. I never did.

The reader is up to no good.

Thierry Jonquet is as French as it gets. He combines all manner of over the top sexual lunacy, Michael Crichton style science, and French crime traditions into a heady mix. Needless to say, I don't want to spoil anything.

The thing that Jonquet nails best is the sense of something being unhealthy. You really get the sense that you're involved in something that's not right and it's not just cause of the stuff going on in the book. It's the whole atmosphere and thinking involved with the characters. There's more than a few disturbed characters here to put it lightly and you're placed in their heads for the entirety of the book.

I mean you're quite literally placed too. The author constantly refers to the reader as the character that is being presented in the moment. It plays out as a you did this, then felt this, and then you're doing something else to the person who just did this and then felt this. He never over plays it either by writing the whole novel in this format. The technique is employed just enough that you don't think about it in the moment. It the best kind of trick where you don't notice until it's already happened. It could be down to translation. It feels like I'm reading something written for English and not something hastily translated to make a cash grab. So the translator really nailed it.

I wish more of his work was translated into English. I'm currently working through one of his books in French (The Beauty and The Beast translated) and it's got the same wild sensibility as this one. If you're a person who loves mysteries or thrillers, you'll definitely enjoy this and his other works.

Revenge. Sweet Revenge.

Near the beginning of MYGALE, we realize that Richard Lafargue, a prominent plastic surgeon, although he treats his woman Eve pleasantly in the presence of others, indeed hates her guts with a searing intensity. As for Eve, although she is locked up at night in her bedroom, we cannot help but wonder why she does not run away or tell someone of her confinement and brutalization when she is around others. After all, it is not like Lafargue is hiding her. He takes her to local parties and such. And, a couple of times a month, he takes her to a Paris apartment where she is used sexually by paying customers, while Lafargue watches with pleasure through a one-way mirror and laughs at Eve's humiliation.

The mystery slowly unfolds in this intriguing tale of revenge. Lafargue has shackled Eve on to him in a rather unique manner. Although the plot device starts to become apparent about halfway through the book, the originality of it nonetheless allows MYGALE to maintain the steam through to the end. Despite her hatred of Lafargue and her humiliation at his hands, Eve cannot go back to the life she once knew.

Along the way we meet Alex, a thug on the run after killing a cop. His story becomes interwoven with that of Eve, Lafargue, and Lafargue's daughter, who is confined to a mental institution. The loose ends come together tightly as we learn the full truth of what has happened.

I picked up MYGALE as it is published by the same noir division of City Lights Books that published a couple of excellent thrillers by Jean-Patrick Manchette. MYGALE lacks the action of Manchette's books and is more subtle and psychological in nature. But the books share the same terse prose and, although it takes a different approach to noir, MYGALE is, like Manchette's books, worth the time.

Strange, weird, great

Jonquet is a French author of children's books, which I am somewhat familiar with. They are good, enjoyable books. I had never read any of his other works, although I did know he had published some mysteries and essays. This novel is one of those, and it is quite a discovery if you ask me. Jonquet depicts a relationship between a man and a woman that is so strange and twisted as to be called surreal. Are they husband and wife? Father and daughter? Lovers? Associates? Acquaintances? Brother and sister? The answer could be any or every one of those. And who is the wounded man? Where do they come together? This book would be great inspiration for a David Lynch or Stanley Kubrick film. This is a world where the crime is accepted and exalted, by its very victim. The story grips the reader tightly, and doesn't let go until the very end. Good thing this is a short book, because I couldn't stop reading.
I gave it four stars, because I began to glimpse the answer to the mystery about halfway through the book. But the story is fascinating in its weirdness, the characters are twisted but somehow likable enough, and the story presents an idea so bold and original as to be shocking by the time it is revealed. Even if you somehow saw it coming.

A great way to start each morning!

for a peaceful inner revolution

This is one of the most profound literatures I ve ever read.the brevity of the words along with the clarity and profoundness of the wisdom resonate within me far deeply than any other self help books.
Each day I convert the gems into a form of affirmation which I read multiple times during the course of the day.what impact is these small words have over me could only be counted by the intangibility of the happiness I feel within each time I repeat these words to myself.

Love this wisdom!

I love these bits of wisdom! They get my day off to a great start and more often than not, really hit home at an issue I'm struggling with. Will never forget reading one about, "What would you say to someone if you knew this was the last time you'd talk with them?" I got that message on a day that ended up being my mother's last day of life. I didn't know it at the time I read the message. Reading the message, though, planted a seed in my mind that day and, thankfully, it was at the forefront of my mind when I ended up having my last conversation with my mother later that day. So, I'm a big fan!
