About the Author
Keith is a freelance journalist whose whole life (well, apart from the wife, the kids, the music and the mountain bike) is computers. He's been writing about them (computers, that is) for over 18 years, in the meantime working as a teacher, lecturer, engineer, journalist and finally (for the last 12 years) freelance in the computing field. He fondly remembers his first contacts with the Commodore Pet, the various Sinclair oddities, the BBC, PC-DOS, MS-DOS, the Mac, and the various incarnations of Windows. He dreams of new software and hardware, he realises that writing about computers makes little compared to making computers or writing the software for them, he is fully committed to passing his experience along to and making computer-life easier for his readers, yet still enjoys what he's doing. Electrons For Beginners

This is a real begginer book that starts as simply as how to pick up a screwdriver. You are expected to know nothing more than how to read. It is the most basic of basics, easy to read and follow through. Just what I needed.

Excellent beginner book...

My son (11) and I are new to electronics. This book has been a great introduction so far. We've only ready the first few chapters, but the fornat is consistant and helpful.

Each chapter ends with a simple quiz (answers in back of the book), which helps underscore important points thay were made.

The book also lists typical equipment that is necessary, and illustrations and photos are used to show proper usage. In addition, there are sections where the reader is asked to use a multimeter to check resistance, voltage level, and/or current, and there are illustrations of where you should place the test leads in the circuit when getting the values. I find that incredibly useful, since it helps remove guess work on my part.

No nonsense; highly recommended.

Randy Slone regurgitates no one; he states in his own words, clearly and in accessible language for the non-specialist, established principles of solid state amplifier design, and places these in the context of his suggested projects. One chapter is devoted to twelve "ready-to-construct" cookbook designs, and full-size PC board artwork for several of these are provided in an appendix. In short, if you want to build and/or design your own audio power amplifiers, this is an excellent resource.
Randy Slone begins with the basics of acoustics relating to audio power amplifiers and methodically walks the reader through a variety of designs, ranging from old to new, and simple to complex. As one would expect, much of this information is founded upon well established research. There is also a significant portion devoted to new techniques and principles of amplifier physics which help to de-mystify amplifier operation and provide pathways to improved performance. Unlike many similar textbooks that focus on only one topology or design philosophy, Randy Slone examines the broad range of amplifier configurations and power capabilities, including mirror-image input stages, fully-complementary VA stages, paralleled output stages, and lateral MOSFET designs.
Randy Slone may be somewhat opinionated, but his opinions appear to be logical reflections of measurable facts; and as any good scientist knows, that what cannot be measured does not exist for the world of science and engineering. He makes short shrift of tube cult; these are devices that produce measurable distortion and can never compete with the power capacity of modern solid state systems. The writing style and technical descriptions are easy to follow although a background in electronic fundamentals is helpful. No more than high school algebra is needed. Occasional humor increases the reading pleasure. Randy Slone has the somewhat eccentric habit of discussing current flow as if it traveled from negative to positive pole, while the convention is to describe it moving the other way. Once the reader becomes accustomed to this way of thinking - not too silly for electrons do indeed travel from negative to positive - it becomes easier to read. It is a complete resource for designing and constructing your own high-quality audio power amplifier systems.
I am currently building myself six of Randy Slone's OPTIMOS kits after reading the book. The fact that Randy Slone also sells the kits from his web site is a highly positive feature. Imagine trying to source all those components and make the PCBs yourself. Furthermore, Randy Slone is always available to help with specific questions and suggestion on a one to one basis. He really does answer his e-mail.

This is the best book I've ever seen on audio amplifiers

I can not speak highly enough of this book. If you want to build your own amps, modify an existing amp, or just learn a lot of electronics all related to audio, this book is worth its weight in gold. The author even sells kits, parts, circuit boards, transformers, capacitors, etc. in the back of the book.
Although I am now an electronic engineer, I wasn't when I built my first audio amplifier kits back in the 70's. And although this is not written for someone without any knowledge of electronics, I wish I could have read it 25 years ago when I was just beginning to learn; it would have been more helpful than most classes I've taken.
The author quite systematically and accurately goes through every stage of audio amplifiers, and even talks about the bizarre stuff: the "magical" capacitors, tubes, expensive wire, etc. By the time you're done with this book you can have the best sounding amplifier in town for less money than some people spend on speaker wire, and you'll understand how it works and why.
After reading the book I had a question and I e-mailed the author. He wrote me back a very detailed letter the very next day! Also, this is a big book with 476 pages with high quality print and lots of very clear schematics. Whether you're a weekend hobbyist or an electronic engineer designing audio power amplifiers, you will find immense amounts of extremely valuable information in this book. I can't recommend it high enough.

If you want to build amplifiers, this is the book you need!

This book will take you by the hand and put you "in the know" if you are attempting to learn about or construct high power audio amplifiers. Mr Slone is very adept at explaining the necessary concepts in a way that can be easily understood. Anyone with technical ability and a reasonable amount of electronics experience should be able to take this book and build an exceptional amplifier. What I particularly like about the book is it not only tells you the details that you must know, it also tells you why and is very solidly backed up with examples. The book literally covered everything I wanted to know (and then some) about amplifiers. From power supplies to the output stages, he very thouroughly unravels the details that separate the truly great designs from mediocre ones (you may never look at your commercially manufactured amp the same way again!) Designs and artwork are included for 12 different amplifiers, each geared towards different applications- and all sporting exceptional performance numbers. Mr Slone has designed these projects around components that are readily accessible and can actually be ordered at very reasonable prices through his business, Seal Electronics. If you want to build, modify, troubleshoot, or just learn what makes an amplifier tick, then this book is the answer.

Lacks intellectual credibility

This book was funded and published by a Christian source, and written to a Christian audience. Despite the author's assertions of objectivity, her writing contains none.

Why I gained respect for the author:

- She called on fellow Christians to be more environmentally conscious and to recognize women as spiritual equals.

- She pointed out how many Wiccans and Neo-Pagans are hypocrites, and this encouraged some serious self-assessment. (Many of us shake a disapproving finger at consumer culture with one hand, while handing over ridiculous amounts of money with the other for the latest flavor of tarot deck, ritual gear, etc.)

Why this respect was lost:

- She attempted to appear balanced and objective when actually she was neither. This book is written from the subjective view that Wicca is wrong and Christianity is right.

- Sanders' hypocrisy when discussing a Pagan creation myth. When she questioned Wiccans and Neo-Pagans about why they chose their current path over Christianity, one of the most frequent answers was "It empowers women, unlike Christianity." The author then discusses why she feels Wicca isn't empowering for women, citing the fallacy of the matriarchal myth as well as the womanizing tendencies of a man who influenced early Wicca, Aleister Crowley. Yes, many scholars agree that the idea of a "matriarchal golden age" is unlikely...but plenty also agree that the Biblical creation myth is equally implausible. I'm curious why Sanders subjects one myth to scrutiny but not the other. And as far as the author's insistence that Christianity actually _does_ empower women, give me a break. Eve was the bearer of original sin, right?

If I could go back and borrow this book instead of buy it, I definitely would.

as well as your personal life choices in your own hands rather than some go between that may or may not have the best interests

I'm honestly not even sure where to begin with this book. It fallows along the same ideas any other anti pagan disguised as a "deeper understanding" type works. As a pagan myself for more that 25 years, I cant see anything of my own ideology in this book. I started with Wicca and stayed there for 5-6 years in the beginning. Throughout all that time I didn't and still haven't based it in anything political or feminist. The thing I gathered and still see very strongly in Wicca is it puts your spiritual choices, as well as your personal life choices in your own hands rather than some go between that may or may not have the best interests of the congregation at large in mind or heart. I puts responsibility of your actions in your own hands. It makes you realize your action or in action has consequences and you better be ready to deal with them. It allows people to study and connect with deity in ways they understand and actually feel connected directly. It's very much a personal, internal progression that isn't for everyone. In my mind that's ok. Not everyone can just give it all over to some unseen deity and through some figurehead of a church in good conscience either. That's ok too. If Christians truly want to have an open dialog in peace, they need to first be solid enough in their own faith to not worry about other people's choices in religion and faith outside of Christianity, and then be willing to learn why other people choose other faiths. They need to realize that, once they have found their strength and faith in their own religion, that other people from other religious leanings have that same exact feeling in their beliefs. They have to understand that religion isn't a one size fits all sort of thing or their wouldn't be so many sects even in their own religion. Only then will their be true peace and open dialog between Christians and not only pagans, but any and all other religion. Act your own conscience in your own life, in your own faith and leave others to do the same in theirs. That is the key they seem to miss so horribly.

Need to code data visualization? This book makes it easy

My SAS programming library includes several entries from this author. Phil Holland writes in a clear, conversational style that effectively explains complex and yet practical techniques to improve your SAS programming. This book has proved to be no different - so many little gems and plenty of comparisons to help you understand why one technique is better than others.

The data visualization chapters guide you through detailed explanations for coding everything from bar charts, box plots and even scatter plots! Most are just a few simple lines of code that can be customized to create really simple and attractive output. The ODS templates were much easy to code than I had suspected. If you are coding data visualizations - this is the book for you.

The Next Big SAS book!

The next big SAS book is now here. With details and practical SAS examples, Phil shows how easy it is to improve program efficiency and customize your SAS environment. The output screenshots make it easy to confirm your results as well as check out the references for more information. Phil’s master of lookup table techniques enables him to compare and contract advanced techniques such as hash tables with more traditional SAS methods.

He does not stop at data management techniques. Phil goes outside of the box with interfaces to SAS including R and Perl for example. He also shows methods for migrating from SAS/Graph to ODS Graphics both standard and customization with Graph Template Language. This helps to transform data to information.

The next big SAS book is a true must for all serious SAS professional programmers.

Phil Holland's New SAS Book is A Programming Tour De Force!

The latest book in Phil Holland’s Power User’s Guide series, SAS Programming and Data Visualization Techniques, is an unmitigated tour de force. It contains fourteen fact-filled chapters covering three very relevant main topic areas: Programming and Efficiency Techniques, External Interfaces, and Data Visualization. As with the other books in the Power User’s Guide series, this book is written in Phil’s authoritative, but conversation style and has lots and lots of code examples that illustrate real-world SAS programming solutions.

There are so many usable programming gems in this book—even for very experienced SAS programming professionals—that it is hard to call them all out in a brief review. However, three specifically come to mind because they can save any organization much more than the price of the book.

Part I: Programming Efficiency Techniques, Chapter 1: The Basics of Efficient SAS Coding. In this chapter, Phil discusses speed versus low maintenance. It is a very nuanced discussion that should make seasoned SAS programmers reconsider what they might have thought was the obvious choice.

Part II: External Interfaces, Chapter 4: SAS to R to SAS. Because of its powerful statistical and graphic capabilities, its low price (it is actually free), and its popularity in academic institutions, R has gained entry into the programming infrastructure of many organizations—including my own. So, sooner or later you are going to need to interface with R; and when you do, you will reach for the examples in this chapter.

Part II: External Interfaces, Chapter 8: Everyday Uses for the SAS Output Delivery System (ODS). The section titled Disguising a Web Page is absolutely brilliant and worth the price of the book. I have bookmarked that page and already begun using this simple, but deeply clever technique in my own SAS programs.

My prediction is that when you purchase SAS Programming and Data Visualization Techniques: A Power User’s Guide, it will not sit in your programming bookshelf between other SAS programming books. Instead, it will be beside your keyboard on your desk with pages dog-eared and a dozen yellow sticky-notes protruding from various pages. Mark my word!
