Far Superior Time Travel

Cynthia Luhrs is an author to watch. Her grasp of everyday life in medieval times is superior to most. I LOVE her whole
Meriweather series and have read them over and over. The violence is clearly due to the century (14th) ...a bit shocking
but we have our own brand today! Very interesting the way her characters are developed and how the girls adapt to
life 700 yrs ago. Her plots are all different and she develops them in such a superb way as to take the reader out of
the living room into the past.
I have started on the next series and am anxious to see how they develope. Will keep all on my Kindle and read them
over and over.

So much fun

I'm waiting to start book 3. I didn't have sisters so it's fun to read this to enjoy the joy and frustration caused by each. The story in the14th century is a bonus and the time travel part is best I enjoyed the adventure so far now for the youngest sisters adventure

I gave this book a 5 because it was soooo much better than the first book! It was funny and so much more action in this book compared to the first. GOOD job. Now on to the last book in this series. HAPPY READING EVERYONE!

Great introduction

I thought that, as far as a highly sensitive topic goes, this was the best possible way to address it in an intelligent and sensitive way. The book is up to date on recent scientific developments and maintains, rightly, that race can never be seriously treated as anything but a social construct. That being said, the author does not dismiss the power and relevance of the social category of race, and talks about the complex ways in which racism(s) play a role in our everyday lives. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is the way the author suggests that labeling someone a "racist" can in some ways be as essentializing and unfair as racism in practice is. The Rattansi does not say this in order to dismiss the power or brutality of many forms of overt and covert racial hatreds; on the contrary, he suggests that racism is far too complex a historical and cultural phenomenon to be dismissed as one person's individual pathology. A very good introduction and a good brief historiography. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone.

Ali Rattansi's Racism is an absolutely outstanding introduction to a very complex topic. In a series of extremely concise and well written chapters, he covers the development of modern racism and its intensification in imperialism and colonialism, the Holocaust and the many complexities of "anti-semitism", eugenics and IQ science, and the resurgence of xenophobia and the rise of the far right in response to immigration from the global south. Unlike many other books on this topic, Rattansi is always careful to point out that the terms involved in this discourse are very difficult to define, and that just as one ought not to essentialize the characteristics of certain ethnic or religious groups groups, the attitudes of those displaying apparently racist sentiment ought to be treated as similarly nuanced. Rattansi, like most of the OUP authors, clearly writes from a universalistic, left wing perspective, but he is alert to the fact that the shutting down of contrary opinions by name calling is highly destructive to the functioning of any true democracy. In a particularly trenchant quote, he notes that "the labelling of an action...as racist should be the beginning of a dialogue and enquiry, not the prelude to a round of polarized shouting matches from entrenched positions." If, like me, you believe that the free movement of peoples is a human right, and are concerned about the problems it may engender in the future, I can't think of a better place to start.

Challenging book for a challenging topic

Mr. Rattansi uses both history/narrative and examinations of the many definitions of racism to organize and present his arguments on racism. The two approaches may frustrate and/or confuse the reader. But the approach serves as a great tool to help analyze racism.

Rattansi also uses both American and British examples to state the problem and address potential remedies and further challenges to solving the problem of racism.

In a "very short introduction" format, readers may be frustrated by seemingly simplistic examples, explanations, and suggested answers. Mr. Rattansi, like the best of other"very short introduction" books has many ideas presented for which further information must be sought out by the individual reader. Racism is too complex, too amorphous to allow for easy approaches and answers. Prepare to be made to work hard, guided by the author, to approach this subject.

Very enjoyable

I actually like Jalizar better than Shelzar, the clear inspiration for Jalizar. I know this is heresy, but hear me out.

Jalizar has a fun, bizarre in spots, history. I enjoyed the way it was told, and look forward to revealing a bit at a time. There is a huge secret in Jalizar, which finding out about and facing would make an epic campaign.

There are some new edges and hindrances, designed mostly for a native.

I enjoyed the GM tips and information on the factions and how to make a location memorable.

The sewers get a well deserved chapter.

Even if you don't want to run a Beast and Barbarians game, I'd really consider picking this up to drop in another fantasy world. It's that good.

Just another variant of TPS

Overall, this book does a fairly good job of introducing TPS, with some variation that some purists may disagree with. The title would have you think tht they had some new insight, but I would recommend "The Toyota Fieldbook" if you wnat to move beyond the basics.
Another point that surprised me was the direct pitch for consulting services - making the book somewhat of an info-mercial, rather than an independent instruction manual.

Still Learning

I bought this book after participating in a Kaizen workshop with the author of this book in Germany. Last week Mr. Takeda was here in the US to lead nine workshops in two of our Michigan locations. The book is obviously nothing like having the author lead the workshop, but a lot of the principles in the workshop are found in the book. Mr. Takeda has consulted to companies in 14 countries over the past 20 years, therefore he knows what works.

Human factors are cited as a major cause in over 70% of accidents, and it is widely agreed that a better understanding of human capabilities and limitations - both physical and psychological - would help reduce human error and improve flight safety.

Many private and commercial pilot licence examinations worldwide now include the subject of human performance and limitations. This book, written by two pilots, one of whom is also an aviation medical practitioner, provides a readable introduction to the basic concepts of human factors in aviation. It features an important section on basic aviation psychology, as well as topics on physiology and high altitude environment and health maintenance.

About the Author
The late Ron Campbell, Executive Chairman of AOPA UK, was a member of the ECAC Working Group and JAA Flight Crew Licensing Committee responsible for the harmonization of pilot training and licensing in Europe. Pamela Campbell, who has also contributed to the book, is a former commercial pilot and flying instructor and is currently the International AOPA delegate on the JAA Flight Crew Licensing Committee.

Michael Bagshaw is Head of Medical Services for British Airways. He is a current professional pilot, flying instructor and examiner, and a recognized authority on human factors in aviation. He was formerly Senior Medical Officer Pilot and specialist in aviation medicine at the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, Farnborough, UK.

A Great Introduction

This is an excelent introduction to the language. It has a very good pronounciation section and contains all the phrases one would need to "get by". It also has a basic vocabulary that provides a good foundation for further study.
But remember it is only an introduction. And the grammar section should be taken with a grain of salt. It mentions two different sets of "pronouns" when one is realy a set of verbal prefixs (jI- bI- ma- Su-), also it says that pronouns come at the end of a phrase this is not always true (eg. taHqeq gragh matlh'e' Maltz is a "taHqeq").
If you want to learn the basics this is an terrific buy. If you want to know more go buy The Klingon Dictionary. Qapla'!

The how to in basic klingon speach, learn some expression and the basic klingon philosophie, you will go through many different aspect of the speach: how to be polite -> get to the point... no small talk, curse warfare, toasting, replacement proverbs, secrecy proverbs, holiday proverbs... and so on !! just bare in mind to keep a towel near by..

This is great, if you listen to it over and over, like when going to work, you will learn the many useful phrases. I'm not going to nit-pick the pronunciation. It's fun.. I'd have given 5 stars if the content were longer, however, don't let that be a sticking point.

About the Author

Marilyn Luber, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and has a general private practice in Center City, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1992, Dr. Francine Shapiro trained her in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). She has coordinated trainings in EMDR-related fields in the greater Philadelphia area since 1997. She teaches Facilitator and Supervisory trainings and other EMDR-related subjects both nationally and internationally and was on the EMDR Task Force for Dissociative Disorders. She was on the Founding Board of Directors of the EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) and served as the Chairman of the International Committee until June 1999. Among the prestigious honors Dr. Luber has received are the Francine Shapiro EMDR International Award (2005), the Outstanding Contribution EMDRIA Award (2003), and the EMDR HAP Humanitarian Services Award (1987). Dr. Luber is also a member of APA, ISTSS, and ISSTD. In 2014, she was part of the Scientific Committee for the EMDR Europe Edinburgh Conference. Currently, she is a facilitator for the EMDR Global Alliance to support upholding the standard of EMDR worldwide. She has worked as a Primary Consultant for the FBI field division in Philadelphia. Dr. Luber has a general psychology practice, working with adolescents, adults, and couples, especially with Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (C-PTSD), trauma and related issues, and dissociative disorders. She runs Consultation Groups for EMDR practitioners.
