Not superior, but still pretty good

Book Six of the series "The Keys to the Kingdom" has the young hero Arthur Penhaligon taking on the oldest Trustee and first Denizen who just happens to be the third oldest entity in the Universe. Superior Saturday is a powerful sorceress who rules the Upper House with the help of thousands upon thousands of lesser sorcerers who do her bidding while stacked in iron framed cubicles with wire meshed floors and no ceilings.

Working conditions suck big time, what with the perpetual rainfall and all, and the job is even tougher for the "grease monkeys" who have to keep the chains and gears in working order. Promotions and demotions are physical moves, sometimes accompanied by projectiles and heckling, and job perks usually mean not much more than a different colored umbrella (ella, ella, eh eh eh)

Superior Saturday is afflicted with the sin of envy, and her sole ambition is to infiltrate the domain of Lord Sunday, through the "Incomparable Gardens". It's up to Arthur, with a little help from his friends, to rise to the top of her Babel-like Tower and secure the Sixth Key.

With this series, you need to read the books in order so as to understand what's going on. This one is very short, but is one of the least complicated as far as the convoluted links that exist between the House and its parts, namely The Lower House, The Far Reaches, The Border Sea, The Great Maze, The Middle House, The Upper House and the Incomparable Gardens. Many sub-plots are left hanging, but the major bummer is the cliff-hanger ending that leaves the reader suspended in mid-air awaiting the final book of the series.

A must-buy for fans of the series in preparation for the final showdown, but a bit lacking in substance on its own.

The rain keeps coming down

Arthur Penhaligan's week is almost over, but unfortunately it's not getting any better. Not for him, and not for the House.

In fact, just about everything is tumbling down in the penultimate book of Garth Nix's Keys to the Kingdom series, "Superior Saturday," in which Arthur finally encounters the malevolent sorceress who's been messing things up throughout the series. It's a suitably chaotic and haunting story, and Arthur's internal struggles and new discoveries are a pretty fascinating read -- but don't expect it to really end on anything but a massive cliffhanger.

Arthur receives an emergency call from his brother, who warns him that the Army is about to nuke their entire town. Desperate, Arthur tries to shield the town, but instead ends up slowing time. Unfortunately that is only one of his worries: the magic of the Keys is transforming Arthur's body and mind into something inhuman, and Nothing is eroding away the very foundations of the House. To stop it, he must somehow steal away Superior Saturday's power, and he has to rely on one of the less reliable forces in the House to smuggle himself and Suzy into Saturday's domain.

While Leaf and her pal struggle to save Friday's sleeping victims, Arthur explores Saturday's realm. Turns out Saturday is building a vast tower built by Piper's Children and overseen by sorcerers, so she can reach the Incomparable Gardens that Lord Sunday rules -- and what's more, Arthur is having a lot of trouble locating the Will. His only hope is to climb the tower with Saturday's sorcerous army -- but what awaits them at the top?

"Superior Saturday" is not just saturated in rain, but in desperation. A lot of bad things are happening all at once, since the House is about to collapse, the town is about to be bombed by the Army, all the Piper's rats and children are suspect, and Arthur has found that he can't even trust Dame Primus anymore. There are a lot of bad things going on in "Superior Saturday," but Nix also unfolds some intriguing new revelations about the House and its purpose, during another visit to the imprisoned Old One.

And Nix somehow loads all of this into the plot without making it feel clunky or infodumpy. He spins a suitably dark and gloomy atmosphere over Saturday's domain, full of steampunk-style machinary and lots of ever-drizzling rain. It moves pretty gradually for awhile, but speeds up after Arthur locates the Will, and bumps into another old enemy. And Nix isn't afraid to throw in some horror moments, such as an unfortunate Denizen whose body was dissolved by Nothing, or the chaotic attacks on Saturday's army during the climax.

The biggest problem is that "Superior Saturday" doesn't really end -- the action and tension slowly build for a long time, only to snap like a recoiling spring... on a cliffhanger. Rather than being story unto itself, it's the first half of a story that "Lord Sunday" will finish.

While Arthur seems to accept his transformation a bit too easily, his struggles with his inhuman thoughts ("For a moment he even felt like striking Scamandros, or forcing the Denizen to prostrate himself and beg forgiveness") and rapidly changing body are well-drawn. And Nix raises some intriguing questions about just what it is that Arthur is turning into, since it's made quite clear that he's not transforming into a run-of-the-mill Denizen.

While it has no real ending, "Superior Saturday" is a dark, mildly horrific ride through what is left of the House, and promises a spellbinding finale in the final Keys to the Kingdom novel. An enthralling little book, so long as you don't mind waiting for what comes next.

Disappointing Semi-Finale

Every book in this series takes a while to get into. However, I was extremely disappointed with the dud of an ending this book had. Either Nix was pressured to finish this book before he was ready, or the publisher got too used to the one book for every denizen Monday-Sunday in the series.

This book seemed rushed, half-hearted and not at all as satisfying as the others in the series. If you don't want to be disappointed, buy Superior Saturday and Lord Sunday together (when it comes out) and read them together as they should have been one book from the start. I really like this author and feel that there must be too much pressure to meet deadlines and follow formulas, a combination of which has stifled Nix's creativity in his latest installment of The Keys to the Kingdom series.

Very concise! Every day covered!

It certainly covers every day of the Civil War. If you wanted to know what happened on a certain day of a month during the war, it will tell you every newsworthy event that happened in a brief format. I can't think of a better book to answer to the question of "What happened on this day in the Civil War?".

About the Author
T.J. Collens is an artist based in New York, and the author of three novels. Inspired by conversations with a next-door neighbor, an exotic dancer who worked at some of Manhattan’s top gentlemen’s clubs, Collens did research into the sordid world of strip bars, fetish websites, and deviant sexual fantasy to write The Cannibal Cabaret. It was serialized on a number of cannibal-fetish message boards, before official publication in 2012.

Excellent Dectective Novel

Thank you for a very enjoyable novel. I ordered it from Amazon and with my prime membership it arrived in just two days with no shipping charges. I finished it in two sittings, which at 376 pages made that something of a marathon. From the very start, the story kept me glued to the pages. This is not some pornographic fetish novel; it is a detective story which contains sex, murder, mystery, criminal gangs, drugs, and yes cannibalism. There is nothing about this book which makes it more obscene than many others you can purchase on Amazon or even at your local bookstore. With "Shade's of Grey" topping the NYT book list, this may be the perfect time to release this book.

When the movie studios discover this, I hope that you will hold out for Jessica Alba to play the part of Traci Maxwell. Can you picture her in this scene?

"He played along with a smile. What are you proposing? She leaned in close, letting her voice brush like feathers into his ear. Then she purred a delectable proposition. You. All alone in a private room. Me. Oven-roasted to perfection and delivered to you, steaming fresh on a platter."

I loved the twists and turns in the plot. Especially when it turned out that the snake eyed DJ from the basement Deli was the one who was caught by Traci's trap. I let out a sigh of relief when he was killed, but then said to myself, hey wait a minute! Something is not quite right here! He can't be the GK killer. I was pinned to my seat during the climax of the novel. And all my questions were answered at the end, in a very satisfactory manner.

This tale is very sensual and deliciously devious. It is also exciting and full of mystery. The characters have depth and the tale is an interesting as well as sexual one. It is a must-read in my opinion.

Sidestepping the acrimony of recent science vs. religion debates, Consolmagno, a Vatican astronomer and self-described "techie," intends that "demonstrating the existence of a lot of people like me, who flourish as scientists while practicing a religion, should be proof enough that science and religion can be perfectly compatible." Combining personal memoir with conversations within the techie world, Consolmagno describes questions about the universe and the meaning of life that attract techies into religious belief and practice, concluding that "techies are not looking for proof. They’re looking for confidence." When he tests his initial hypotheses with a survey project, Consolmagno finds that for many religiously-involved techie types, the value of community and moral support may actually be more important than the search for religious answers. As one atheist interviewee puts it, "You think you are selling truth, but your audience has already brought their own truth with them to church. All you are selling them is tech support." Is this all there is to religion? Certainly not for Brother Guy, who defends a specifically Christian and Catholic version of religious truth. Yet Consolmagno’s adroit and self-effacing style defuses any suggestion of theological point-scoring, as in his dryly Dilbertian defense of papal infallibility: "Unlike some of the other bosses I’ve worked for in my life, this one admits that he’s only infallible under certain extremely limited conditions."

A Different Take

Brother Guy is a Vatican astronomer who specializes in the study of meteorites and dwarf planets. He's also a regular at various science fiction conventions, and the thing I liked most about his book, aside from his techie sense of humor, is he gives a very interesting answer (or set of answers) to the question, how do scientists, who are trained to be skeptics, make sense of religion.

Here's a brief sample from his book:

"So if doing science is ultimately a religious act, why does the story of a split between science and religion exist in out culture today? Because too many religious people have been scared away from science by the very stories of this split. Because most scientists keep their religion private, as is their right. Because the religious people most likely to be heard in the news are those whose strong bent in engineering hides their very limited education in science: the creationists. Because the scientists who do speak publicly about these topics have been precisely those whose very limited education in religion (people like Richard Dawkins or Stephen Jay Gould) have made them "science fundamentalists"," every bit as narrow as the religious fundamentalists and probably not the best representatives of their fields--just the best known." (p. 169)

A Non-fiction page turner

Brother Guy Conssolmagno has exceeded his presentation of the synthesis of religion and science he began in Brother AstronomerBrother Astronomer: Adventures of a Vatican Scientist. In his presentation of believing in God and religion Consolmagno claims to be taking a techie point of view. He defines a techie as someone whose world view pragmatic, logical and functional. Techies want to know how things work. It is this attitude that gives them an understanding of God as "all modern science developed precisely because the medievals believed in a creator God,and thus they had the confidence to assume that this apparently chaotic universe did make sense (and was worthy of study)." On the matter of religion, he likens it to the scientific community which through peer review of experimental results leads to a better understanding of the world. His chapters specifically directed to his Roman Catholic religion (he is a Jesuit) apply to almost any main stream catholic, orthodox or protestant organization because it deals with his humanity and how that requires him to deal with other humans, God, and his creation. Consolmagno raises points of disagreement, but explains his position in a clear enough manner that you can argue with him, which makes the book fun as well as enlightening. His easy to read style and clear presentation of ideas make this book a page turner even if it is non-fiction.

Fresh view on how techies approach God and religion

A very interesting book on religion from the point of view of techies. The author is a Jesuit brother and also an astronomer, with advanced degrees from MIT and Arizona. The book exposes how techies think about God(s) and religion(s), the supposed "gap" between science and religion, and how different parts of religion (such as an organized religion, rules, etc...) make sense when analyzed analytically and pragmatically. The author did some research interviewing scientists on their views, and extracts some interesting ideas on how techies approach religion. The second part of the book is about the author own experiences, and how he makes sense of his faith and the life he has chosen.
I greatly appreciate that when he has no rational answer to some question, he says so, and makes himself clear when he says some of his views are biased. It is a book that could spur many interesting talks with friends, religious or not. It is easy to read and entertaining, and even the author makes some fine geeky jokes here and there. (It would have been interesting if the book included some bibliography or "further reading" section at the end of the book.) Recommended.

About the Author

Robin Banerjee is a senior professional executive with over 35 years of experience in several large multinational corporations in more than 20 countries. He is a Chartered Accountant, Cost and Management Accountant, Company Secretary, and has a Master’s degree in commerce. 

During the initial years of his career, he served in Hindustan Unilever in several positions, including as the General Manager of its Exports and M&A divisions. He then moved to Germany and joined Arcelor-Mittal as its Managing Director and CFO of its German operations. After working in Germany for five years, Robin moved back to India and joined Thomas Cook as its Executive Director. He then moved to Essar Steel as the company’s CFO and member of its global board. After that he joined Suzlon India Ltd. as its Group CFO and member of its board for several of its international companies in Australia, China, Chile, Mexico, South Africa and the USA. Currently, he is the Managing Director of a large manufacturing company. 

Robin has won several awards and was nominated by Business Today as the Best CFO in India; as CFO-100 in 2010 and 2012 by the CFO-India magazine; the Corporate Leader in India by DNA; and many others.

Robin has written three books on indirect taxation, one of which, Modvat, has gone into 10 editions. He is an acclaimed speaker on business management and finance-related topics, and has presented papers in numerous national and international seminars. He frequently writes for various journals, magazines and web-sites.

Nikolas Kerr
founder and president of Kerr Consulting Group LLC, a firm based in Silicon Valley focused on helping companies successfully launch medical device products. He has spent over 15 years in a variety of product marketing roles from entry level to executive positions at large device companies (Medtronic) and at small device start-ups. During that time, he successfully launched more than 10 medical device products which collectively generate over $500 million in annual revenue.  Mr. Kerr has undergraduate and graduate degrees in business and economics from the University of South Carolina. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife, Xiaolei, and has three children.

Tony Recupero
proven commercial leader with over 25 years of medical device experience. Tony heads up Catalyst Performance Consultants, where he advises sales and marketing executives on revenue-accelerating sales and marketing strategies. Tony was formerly president and CEO of Baxano, which was sold to Trans1, Inc. in 2013. Prior to Baxano, Tony built a highly acclaimed sales force as vice president of sales for Kyphon Inc., which was sold to Medtronic in 2007 for $3.9 billion. Before that, Tony led the Sulzer Spine-Tech sales force to over $110 million in revenue. Tony started his medical device career in sales management with United States Surgical Corporation, well known as an aggressive sales and marketing organization, where he excelled in a rapid growth environment. Tony Recupero is a graduate of the General Management Program at Harvard Business School and holds a bachelor's degree in communications from the State University of New York at Albany. Tony lives in Pleasanton, California, with his wife, Patty, and has five children.

Being fresh to the medical device salesworld and its competitive nature, this book provided key insight for myself on the power of marketing and how every aspect of launching a device must be used to its fullest advantage with feedback from ever level of the company. These two experienced authors were able to provide real-life examples of what to do and what not to do when launching a product. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a practical, clear and concise guide to expand their horizon when it comes to promoting a medical device(s) or any product for that matter!

I really like how the authors packed in so much valuable information in under 80 pages. Very refreshing! I'm tired of reading other business books that drag on as if they are trying to hit a target page # set by the publisher. The book also reads very fast with many practical examples that can quickly be adopted to boost the success of a product launch. Having launched and participated in many product launches myself, I highly recommend this book for folks involved in medical device product launches. A fun, easy and practical read!

Great book! Incredible amount of useful and compact information about launching a medical device. It comes from two people who have done it and understand the needs from the sales and marketing perspective.

I'm in the midst of launching a product and this book lays out a direct pathway and checklist. I recommend this book for anyone in the medical device space or anyone planning on launching a medical product.
