About the Author
Dr.Geoffrey Davison has spent all his working life in Southeast Asia, as a university lecturer in Malaysia, a conservationist with WWF, and now with the National Parks Board in Singapore. His interests range across ornithology, tropical forest ecology, and animal taxonomy.Yeap Chin Aik is currently Head of the Conservation Division at the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) in Kuala Lumpur.

Possibly the best illustrated book on Malaysian birds...!

Frankly speaking, my birth place was Malaysia. When I was in this country of my birth, I took up the hobby of bird-watching. I particularly like the Dawn Chorus, when myraid of birds greet the dawn with their rioteous songs. I possess several books on Malaysian birds but the best guide is this book: A Naturalist's Guide to the Birds of Malaysia....! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this manual to fellow bird-watchers when they go to the Malaysiana region or for those who reside there. I thank the authors for such a well-illustrated book...keep it up...Cheers!

Don't turn the page!

I wandered into the room of my best friend's three-year-old son, preparing to read him a book before he went to bed. When I saw this book among the pile on his floor, I got nostalgic. Really nostalgic. My mom read me the same book when I was his age, and I love, LOVE this book.
Not only does it teach you that sometimes the answer to all of your questions is right in front of you, but it does so by giving you pages of Grover, one of the most hysterical, lovable Muppets. The rattling of Grover's nerves, and the actual building of suspense in a picture book, keep the reader turning the book's pages -- even though Grover BEGS you not to do so. The reader is actually included in the narrative, for the book involves only Grover talking to the reader. The book thus becomes involving very quickly and entertaining throughout it.
Plus, the final punchline is a great payoff.
If you have children, this is an absolute must. Unlike other books from children's shows, this one's intelligent, maintains proper values and isn't beat-me-over-the-head annoying.

Destiny, Fate, and Self-Knowledge

_The Monster At The End Of This Book_ (henceforth "TMATEOTB") is a fascinating treatise on several of the philosophical problems lurking at the core of modern and classical thought. The premise -- that, with the turn of each page, the reader brings self-described "lovable, furry Grover" closer to danger at the hands of the title monster -- allows one to question the very nature of free will and destiny. Is Grover doomed to encounter the monster? The conceit that it is the act of turning pages -- the literal act of reading itself -- that causes the ending to come about inevitably leads to the question: Would the book end differently if one _didn't_ finish reading it? On another level, TMATEOTB addresses one of the paradoxes of contemporary physics: The equality of space and time. The "end of the book" is an event in the future, but the monster is not spoken of as "arriving", but as _already being there_. Thus, turning pages moves the reader and Grover not only forward in time, as in most traditional literature, but also forward in space, leading to the perilous End of the Book. Lastly, TMATEOTB is about how we are ultimately at the whim of the cosmic forces that shape our lives. The hapless protagonist tries again and again to stop the reader from turning pages by erecting brick walls and nailing one page to the other. His efforts are futile, but he remains unaware of his essential helplessness in the face of a Reader. Perhaps, the book says, we are ultimately doomed to fail, trapped within the pages of cosmic irony, but unable to prevent or even perceive the inevitability of our encounter with the monster. The shocking twist ending wraps up the disparate threads of the text, presenting issues of self-knowledge, the nature of fear, and the question of what it truly means to be a monster. Perhaps the failure of our quests for safety in an uncertain world isn't so bad, it argues, if it leads to a confrontation like the one depicted in _The Monster At The End Of This Book_.

Why did they have to add Elmo

As a child I read "Monster at the End of the Book" and loved it. My question is why did they have to write pretty much the same story and add Elmo. Must he poke his little red head into every aspect of Seasame Street there is. The story lost some of its suspence when he was added. The children in my class when I read the first book they were the ones pushing Grover through the story. In this one Elmo is pushing Grover along and not the children. If you are looking for a great book for your children pick the first one and leave Elmo out.

P.S I have read this with Early Childhood classrooms and Special Education.

Great Premise. Great Collection.

A welcome update to John D'Agata's The Next American Essay (2003), B.J. Hollars has assembled an illuminating collection of genre bending essays. I'm planning on using Blurring the Boundaries in my upper division nonfiction workshop this fall. The book features a reflection by each essayist on their piece (the reflections sometimes rivaling the actual essays!) and thoughtful writing exercises in the back. As with all anthologies, some works are stronger than others, but anyone interested in craft, form, and word play should find a great deal to work with here.

An anthology of essays with definitive syles of each author.

A very useful book of essays with a discussion by the author of this anthology. I would have eliminated one but I have not read every essay thus far. The essays are meant to teach non fiction writing students. It is an excellent guide.

Really great reference for a part of the male anatomy that is often only sketched in tentatively or inaccurately portrayed. If you aren't comfortable looking up photo reference of the male...undercarriage...this is the next best thing. The figures shown are semi-realistic leaning toward typical "yaoi" style proportions.

Text is in Japanese, of course, and there's quite a bit of it. Plenty of illustrations though and it doesn't take a lot of thought to understand the points being made. By American standards some might find this book a bit explicit - just a heads-up if you are thinking "hips" in the English sense of the word.

Best SF of the year so far. Recommended

Children of Time quite simply took my breath away. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could, and that missing 0.5 stars will be explained in a moment.

The story spans thousands of years and tells of the end of Humankind and the birth of a new species, a new world. There’s action, intrigue, romance (a little), and the great expanse of a new world, and boy what a world. Tchaikovsky has created a world-building scenario the likes of which I haven’t seen in a long time in SF. But unlike those old-timers he’s utilised modern biological vectors to power his evolutionary tale and it works wonderfully. The entertainment to be had from such a story construct is presented with daring style, and the reader is rewarded at every turn of the page.

The story as a whole is nicely paced, and the writing is good.

My only complaint is that sometime I felt the human characters (not all of th echaracters are human) acted irresponsibly, allowing situations to befall them, which they possibly might have avoided. Also, the main human protagonist reacted most of the time, true, there were circumstances forcing that, but I felt he could have been a little more proactive.

The above said, it hardy distracted from, what for me, has been the highlight of the SF publications this year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Very unique and original

Children of Time begins just after humanity manages to completely screw themselves over, and tells two overlapping stories, set over a period of 5,000 years. The first is about the crew of the ship Gilgamesh, and follows them through the periods when they wake up from hyper-sleep while they search for a colonisable planet for the remnants of humanity to use as a new home.
The second story follows the subjects of an Uplift project, only instead of the apes the Uplift virus was meant to work on, there are only arthropods. In this case, spiders, which become much larger and more intelligent, although Uplifted ants play a large role and intelligent shrimp are mentioned.
If this sounds like a strange premise, it is, but is also very well done. The characters are fleshed out and each has their own motivations, and the world created (in both senses) is so novel and imaginative that I derived as much delight from imagining other ways it might have developed as I did reading how it did. In particular I found the evolution of an intelligent arachnid society to be completely new, and more than once I found myself wishing the human sections would hurry up and finish so I could read more about the spiders.
I'm not entirely certain how satisfying I think the ending is. While it isn't a bad ending, it isn't great either. Also, some of the spiders technology is completely believable given how differently they would approach technical matters, but other parts seem to be just hand-waved through. To be fair, I couldn't explain how a computer works either, so this may just be my lack of understanding on the subject.
Overall, a very enjoyable book, and I'd love another one, or even just a novella, about the shrimps or some other Uplifted arthropod species.

Astonishingly good hard SF novel

Wow. It does start off relatively slow (do we really need to read pages of exposition from the perspective of an alien?) but very quickly thing gets VERY real.

I'm happy to say that I was completely unspoiled about the story and thus was completely surprised and engrossed when the full ambitious scope of Tchaikovsky's novel slowly revealed itself.

Essentially CHILDREN OF TIME is two (very good!) science fiction books: one story is about an ark ship containing 500,000 frozen humans who are the last remnants of humanity (reminiscent of Kim Stanley Robinson's AURORA) and the other is an uplift story with incredibly realistic descriptions of an authentically alien culture (reminiscent of Vernor Vinge's A DEEPNESS IN THE SKY).

Time is a key component of the story, as we follow multiple generations of the aliens as they evolve and their culture slowly develops technology. On the ship a great deal of time also passes, with the use of cold sleep allowing the audience's main characters to avoid most of the effects of time's arrow.

Much of the compelling nature of the story is based around the reader's connection to the fate of humanity and the skill with which the author has presented the alien culture so that when the inevitable clash between the two factions occurs it is difficult to know who to root for! (The ending is pretty surprising, if a tad too neat.)

Overall, CHILDREN OF TIME is an incredibly compelling standalone novel of hard science fiction which is an instant classic in the grand tradition of Neal Stephenson's SEVENEVES, Vinge's A DEEPNESS IN THE SKY and Isaac Asimov's THE GODS THEMSELVES.
